“Your story is worth telling.”

TRANSPARENT SELF PORTRAIT

Altered fold-out map, mixed-media materials

What was your inspiration for this piece?

I had an interesting fold-out map of Italy that I wanted to use to explore family lineage and my place within that lineage. So I began altering the map with self-portraits, photo transfers from old family albums and lots of mixed-media techniques.

Do you have an art journaling process?

My art journal process is not really formalized, except that I do have one sort of ritual around creating them. I never have just one journal—I always start four to six art journals at once. This way, I have them spread out all over my studio and I can work the layers on one, set it aside to dry, but continue to make art by starting another layer in another journal, set that one aside to dry, start another, and on and on.

What tips would you give to fellow art journaling artists?

My only tip for people is to just keep working the page. There are no mistakes, even when you make a mistake. It’s all a practice, not a perfect.
